Sebastian, the tiny Chihuahua puppy found close to death in a gutter, has been growing stronger every day.  He is a very happy and active little pup, but Sebastian has some permanent health problems.  Our veterinarian has diagnosed him with cerebellar hypoplasia, which means that part of his brain never developed properly.  Sebastian requires special medication to control his seizures and will require special care for the rest of his life.  But, we are confident that he will be able to live a very happy life.  If you can provide Sebastian with a special home where he will always be safe and always be loved, please contact us.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Pickle the rooster.  We tried everything we could to save Pickle, but he passed away while under the care of our veterinarian.  Our vet determined that Pickle was born with Avian Leukosis, a virus that causes cancer in chickens. Unfortunately, there is no cure and no treatment for the disease.  Pickle was such a special little man.  He brought a lot of happiness to all of our volunteers and visitors and he will be greatly missed.

December 25, 2011 – Hooves & Paws Animal Shelter, a nonprofit animal rescue shelter, is helping a horse in California who was badly injured with a severe laceration on his chest, along with a permanent deformity of one of his hind legs. With no idea where he came from, Papelbon the horse, is being cared for by the Hooves & Paws volunteer veterinarian.

“We are pleased to welcome a new horse to our horse rescue in California. Papelbon is making great strides in the healing process and the deformity does not hinder him much as he is able to run quite easily,” said Michele Padilla, founder of Hooves & Paws Animal Rescue. “Papelbon loves people and has become fast friends with our other rescued horses. He now has open fields to run in and does not worry about getting hurt or being abandoned anymore.

A tiny puppy, only weeks old, was found in a gutter by a concerned animal lover.  He was whimpering and close to death.  The person who found the puppy was not able to help him so we rushed him to our veterinarian.  The puppy, now named Sebastian, is doing much better but is still suffering from neurological problems.  We are closely monitoring his condition.  We are hoping Sebastian will fully recover so that he can be placed in a loving adoptive home.

We are pleased to welcome a new horse to our sanctuary.  Papelbon came to us through our veterinarian who was treating a severe laceration on his chest.  His wound is almost completely healed, but the horse also suffers from a permanent deformity of one of his hind legs.  The deformity does not hinder him much and he is able to run quite easily.  Papelbon loves people and has become fast friends with our other rescued horses.

Hank was rescued after he was found abandoned and starving on the streets of South Los Angeles.  He is now safe at our sanctuary and is looking for a new home.  He is an incredibly sweet dog and gets along with all humans and animals he meets.  Hank would be great in a home with other dogs and with kids.  He is looking for a family who will love him and care for him for the rest of his life.

Perry is a sweet young duck who came to our sanctuary because his family could no longer keep him.  His family received him as a gift when he was just a tiny duckling.  They loved him and took great care of him, but they live in an area where they cannot keep farm animals.  Wanting him to have a safe home for the rest of his life, they contacted us and asked if he could live at our sanctuary.  We agreed and Perry is now a member of our flock of rescued ducks, chickens and turkeys.  He is still getting used to his new life but seems to be settling in quite well.

These two adorable goats were rescued before they even born.  Their mother and several other pregnant goats were about to be euthanized at a Las Vegas shelter until the Nevada SPCA stepped in to save them.  However, with limited room for farm animals, the Nevada SPCA asked for our help and we agreed to take 5 of the rescued goats.  The great news is that the two baby goats have been adopted!  Casper and Kate are now happily living with one of our dedicated volunteers.

Several weeks ago, one of our volunteers rescued this sweet pup after she was nearly killed by an SUV.  We were never able to find her owner but we did find her a new loving home.  Lucy has been adopted by one of our very dedicated supporters.  Lucy loves her new home and her new mom.  She has also become fast friends with Wiley, who our supporter adopted from our rescue a few years earlier.  We are so happy for Lucy and we know she will be loved and spoiled for the rest of her life.
