Dog Rescue Centers Reasons to Spay and Neuter Your Pets
You can personally make a difference by spaying or neutering your pet. It is a fact that this is one of the single most important thing you can do to prevent animal cruelty and abuse. Spaying or neutering your pet saves lives and keeps them out of shelters like our dog rescue center!
- Spay or neuter your pet so you don’t contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. Pet overpopulation is the number one killer of dogs and cats in the U.S. In every community there are animals sitting in animal shelters like our dog rescue center, waiting for homes. Only about half of those dogs and cats will ever get one. The rest will be euthanized. It is estimated that between 6 and 8 million American pets are euthanized each year; this translates to 16,438 to 21,917 pets euthanized each day!
- Spaying or neutering also provides many added health benefits. Your pet is less likely to develop uterine infections, mammary or testicular cancer which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. It is important to spay or neuter your pet before their first heat for females, and as soon as possible for males to help prevent these diseases. The latest medical findings indicate that your pet will live a longer healthier life if it is spayed or neutered.
- By spaying or neutering your pets, they will be less likely to roam, bite, scratch, and fight, and will be far more content. Many aggression problems, like with small dogs, can be avoided by neutering early on. Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their owners while unneutered pets, like ones we get at our dog and cat rescues may mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over your home.
